Happy Accidents
Waaayy back in CCN # 3, I wrote this article about not being afraid to make mistakes.
The best thing you can do is show up every day and give it your all. Use your mistakes and errors as learning experiences. And have faith in yourself that while you don’t “know it all” you will be able to problem solve and figure it out.
I thought the article was worth a reshare, especially today as things have evolved and I’ve joined forces and building out Alt.CMO to provide Fractional Marketing for the A/E/C and Contech world.
When I started this Newsletter back in June of 2022, I, in no way could have imagined it would have led me to here. I’m finding entrepreneurship is much like being a Construction Manager. You do need to be an expert in some things but then this still rings true:
Construction is not a one man show rather a team sport. Your job is not to be the Subject Matter Expert (SME) in all things.
Your job is rather:
To have a base level understanding in most things.
To be able to assemble a team of Subject Matter Experts (SMEs) in all things. And make sure those SMEs have a qualified team behind them to fill in their knowledge gaps.
To have the knowledge to call BS when its needed.
To get the right people all going the right direction.
So what business does a Construction Manager have getting into the marketing business?
Well, through Construction Yeti I’ve experimented, learned, failed, tried again, and made more happy mistakes.
I feel I’ve been able to learn faster than your average marketer who’s doing it professionally because marketing can change so rapidly and I’m not having to go the safe route and do things the “textbook way” which aren’t always effective today. If you’re still running the exact same strategy you did 5 years ago, you are way behind the curve. Sure, some strategies are still wildly effective but others aren’t. Platforms and algorithms change. Hell, some things I was doing last quarter don’t work the same as they do now.
I’m also surrounding myself with those Subject Matter Experts to fill in the gaps I don’t know. I’ve talked about partnering with Ryan in previous weeks, but we are also talking to more highly qualified CMOs to bring into the fold. (If you are a Director of Marketing or CMO level and want to explore Fractional work, lets talk!)
If you are just starting out in your Construction Career, I encourage you to read the full article.
And if you are a business owner/ leader, and looking to assemble a team of highly qualified SMEs. I’d love to talk to you about your marketing.

One Podcast
Last week Jonathan Cor dropped the first “Construction Marketers” podcast. I was honored to be guest numero uno.
This is the stuff we chatted about:
Ps- We recorded it a while back, before the Substack crossed the 2,000 subscriber mark. 😁
One Quote
This is from Jocko Willink. But its how most of us Project Managers feel many days. Some days you are so motivated you could run through the wall. Other days, it takes all your willpower to open you Outlook inbox and process/ respond to your messages. But you make yourself do it. Showing up every day and doing your job is how buildings get built. Not by Motivation.
