The iconic American hard hat job that has the highest level of open positions ever recorded
From CNBC:
According to an outlook from Associated Builders and Contractors, a trade group for the non-union construction industry, construction firms will need to attract an estimated 546,000 additional workers on top of the normal pace of hiring in 2023 to meet the demand for labor. The construction industry averaged more than 390,000 job openings per month in 2022, the highest level on record, while unemployment in the sector of 4.6% was the second lowest on record.
“Firms are realizing that no one’s gonna solve the problem but themselves. So, they’re building stronger relationships with high school programs, even middle school programs. They’re finding ways to get students out to construction job sites to expose them to career opportunities,” Turmail said.
If you don’t know the story behind the Got Milk? campaign, it’s one of the best advertising campaigns of all time. Here is a short explanation of it and its significance.
It wasn’t a single company behind it and it wasn’t a new sexy product. In fact, the product was as boring as it could be and it was run by a consortium of California milk processors.
From the outside looking in construction can look boring and unsexy. And it’s a bunch of fragmented companies and associations.
That sounds like a perfect recipe for a culturally changing ad campaign!
So who wants to take charge of the Construction Industry’s “Got Milk?” campaign?!? Let me know I’ll join in!
But once you get them, you gotta keep them.
In his Soft As Steel Podcast appearance, Wally Adamchik made a point that many contractors don’t have trouble finding people. They just have trouble keeping people. He says it could be a training or culture story but it’s definitely a “we need to do things differently story.”
